How to use shampoo to tell about the Motherland

The story of how a Palestinian refugee helps her country and people.
My name is Effatudin Bardvil, I am a Palestinian, but I have never been to my homeland. I’m a fifth-generation refugee. I live in Russia, I am studying to become a journalist, and I really want people to know that Palestine is not only a military conflict, but also a beautiful and fertile country. How I tell people about my Homeland through flowers, cosmetics, and a personal brand is all the details in this article.

It all started with bombs

My roots were uprooted from my native lands back in the middle of the last century. In 1948, during the Arab-Israeli war, bombs were dropped on the village of Al-Jura, where my family lived. All the inhabitants left the village and it remained completely deserted. Some of my relatives moved to the Gaza Strip, and some went to Russia, where my personal story began much later.

To this day, peaceful Palestinians do not know peace.

In 2023, a terrible thing happened again. Because of the conflict between two countries — Israel and Palestine — people died, including more than 40 of my relatives. We had to make incredible efforts to persuade my grandmother, aunt and cousins to leave Gaza and take them to Egypt.

Visiting the motherland is a cherished dream, but not yet feasible. My home, Homeland, and even the immediate prospect of coming there were taken away from me. But I figured out how to be close to Palestine and how to help my compatriots.

There should be a place for flowers in life

My husband became my inspiration, support and support. Sharing our dreams and plans for life with each other, we realized that we wanted the same thing: to tell people about what Palestine really is. And we realized how we can not only talk about it, but also let people feel, feel the gifts of this country for themselves. This is how the idea came up to create a line of care cosmetics for face, body and hair.

The peculiarity of these products is their natural composition and the fact that each shampoo and gel contains the fruits and flowers that Palestine is rich in. We carefully select which plants, fruits and flowers will be combined with each other to enhance their beneficial properties and make the product effective. However, one element always remains the same: a flower (flower oil) must be present in each bottle. Not only because of the benefits, that’s the main idea. That’s what we called the brand — Blooms instead of bombs (flowers instead of bombs). Instead of bombs, I’m handing out flowers.

Bombs are the weapons of weaklings and murderers. And flowers are a symbol of the free and strong. Thus, with the help of everyday things that people use on a daily basis, we want to convey to everyone that Palestine is diverse and beautiful, that it can be viewed from a different perspective.

However, the connection with Palestine can be traced not only in the makeup, but also in the names of each product. Ramallah, Jenin, and Jaffa are all cities in Palestine rich in cultural and historical heritage. The idea is simple. When purchasing a product, an inquisitive person will be interested in the name, find it on the Internet and read about the city — this way the piggy bank of his knowledge will be replenished with new information about Palestine. The country will cease to be associated with military chronicles from the news column, it will acquire new colors.

We don’t want to capitalize on someone else’s grief

Each of our vehicles has an inscription: Born in free Palestine. Many people know the words made in China and know that there is such a country as China. And our idea is for customers to see this inscription and involuntarily remember: there is such a country — Palestine, and wonderful fruits and flowers grow in it, which will help to become more beautiful and look younger.

However, this label born in free Palestine and our brand as a whole caused a lot of discussion at the start. The fact is that the launch of sales, as well as the advertising campaign and the armed conflict of 2023 coincided in time, and many decided that this was how we wanted to make money on a "hype" topic. However, business people know that the creation and implementation of their brand is not a one—day process. And our company was conceived long before the military conflict.

Your brand as a way to help people

The goal of our business is to achieve success. But profit is not in the first place. The slogan of our products is: "In every bottle is Palestine. Every bottle contains concern for Palestine." And it’s not just a beautiful phrase. With each purchase, we send a portion of the money to charity. We help compatriots living in Palestine and refugees in Russia. However, it is wrong to think that we only support the Palestinians. When several settlements of the Kursk region were occupied by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, one well-known marketplace announced an action: residents of the region could buy many goods for 1 ruble. We also took part in the action without hesitation. We are constantly learning from our fellow Palestinians that, despite any circumstances and even being in an oppressed situation, it is always necessary to help others.

The purpose of my business with my husband is also to make as many people as possible aware of Palestine.

What’s now and what’s in the future

Currently, our production facilities are both physically and legally located in Russia, which makes our products competitive in terms of import substitution. Flowers, oils, and fruits — the raw materials for our cosmetics — are typical of the flora of Palestine, but so far they are used locally.

We are planning to change something:

  • Some of the ingredients included in the composition will be delivered from Palestine, and we will be able to produce products with them.
  • It is planned to expand the product line from 12 to 20 products during 2025.

These are the most immediate plans. In the future, we will have constant supplies of raw materials from our native country, which will help us support Palestinian producers and provide jobs for people, which means that we will participate in the restoration of our homeland.

Resume

When creating our brand, we thought about our native country and how to support it in difficult times. But we also tried to make a high-quality product that, above all, would appeal to people and help solve their problems. However, our brand doesn’t just create products, it tells the story of Palestine. We are trying to show the world the beauty and richness of this land, and also encourage people to think about its problems. Our goal is to create a good impression of Palestine and help it find its voice.
